After losing her husband to brain cancer, our founder set off on a healing journey through Africa with her new unwanted title of "widow", a table of one. During her month of travel, she not only fell in love with the mountain gorillas, she felt like Rwanda was home. So she said goodbye to the United States and moved her life to Rwanda to start the Silverbacks franchise. During her travels, she documented her story with both her pen and her camera to create a coffee table book of incredible photography with an inspiring story.

How saving the gorillas inspired the Silverbacks dream
The Mountain Gorillas live in the Virunga volcanic mountains within three national parks in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As of 2018, they are listed as endangered, although conservation efforts have vastly improved their numbers from a little over 250 in 1981 to over 1,000 as of today. So why do we care? Other than their magnificent beauty and enviable family values, we share 98% of the same DNA and saving them is ultimately saving us. The tropical forests they live in are the "lungs of our planet" and without them our lungs can't breathe.
